Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Ben Copeland had three assists and Jackson Cates scored unassisted to deliver a 4-3 Waterloo Black Hawks win Saturday night against the Sioux City Musketeers at Tyson Events Center.
Waterloo trailed 3-0 at one point, but the game was tied 3-3 in the third with the Musketeers on a power play. A mishandled puck at the Waterloo blue line sent Cates up the rink on a shorthanded breakaway. Stepping through the left circle, he beat Matt Jurusik to the short side to give the Hawks their first lead at 7:19.
Cates' 29th goal of the season stood up as the game-winner.
Sioux City had surged to the lead beginning at 5:18 of the first when Sampo Ranta cashed in on a partial breakaway. The ensuing faceoff led to a full-fledged breakaway goal by Micah Miller just 11 seconds later. The Musketeers built their lead to 3-0 when Matyas Svoboda scored from the slot on a rebound at 9:16.
Jack Drury drew one goal back at 17:29. Copeland got to the puck off a dump in and centered to Drury from behind the opposing goal. Drury fired a low shot past Jurusik to the stick side.
Waterloo was able to climb back the rest of the way thanks to early second period power plays. Just 51 seconds into the period, Garrett Wait received a Copeland pass disguised as a shot near the side of the Musketeers net. Wait knocked the elusive puck across the goal line from close range.
The Hawks capitalized on their next power play at 5:10. Copeland set up Sam Huff in the left wing circle, and Huff blasted a one-timer between the pipes. Waterloo denied three Musketeer power plays from that point to the end of the period to hold the score even at intermission.
Waterloo finished the night two-for-six on the power play and four-for-four on the penalty kill.
Matej Tomek was the winning goaltender in relief with 23 saves on 24 shots.
The Black Hawks complete a three-game road trip on Friday against the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders.
