Vermont Mountaineers News Release
MONTPELIER, Vt. - The Vermont Mountaineers scored four runs in the third inning on Saturday, leading them to a 6-1 win over the Sanford Mainers in the New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL).
The Mountaineers loaded the bases in the fourth inning, setting up infielders Brett Malm (Medford, N.Y./Adelphi) and Davis Mikell (Williston, Vt./Castleton) to hit RBI singles, putting Vermont on the board. Malm, right fielder Jesse Forestell (Homewood, Ill./Western Michigan), left fielder Jeffery Scott (Forest, Ind./Bowling Green State), and second baseman Nick Ward (Kennett Square, Pa./West Chester) all came around to score in the frame.
Vermont added another run in the fourth when Chase Grant (Carlsbad, Calif./U of Nevada Reno) drove in Ryan Hoogerwerf (Allen, Texas/U of Portland) with an RBI double. Grant scored a run of his own in the seventh on a balk.
The Mountaineers got an excellent start from righty Sam Finnerty (Tuscaloosa, Ala./U of Alabama Tuscaloosa), who lasted five innings, allowing one run on three hits. Finnerty struck out five and didn't walk anyone.
Sanford scored its only run of the game in the fifth inning when third baseman Zach Scott (Scottsdale, Ariz./St Leo) hit a solo home run to right field. The Mainers combined for just four hits in the game.
Justin Courtney (Bangor, Maine/UMaine) suffered the loss for Sanford after allowing five earned runs on eight hits over six innings of work. Courtney falls to 1-1 on the season.
Vermont relievers Andrew Magno (Dublin, Ohio/Ohio State), Rayne Supple (Shelburne, Vt./Wake Forest), and Luis Acosta (Edinburg, Texas/Texas Rio Grande Valley) combined to allow only one hit over four innings.
Finnerty gets the win for the Mountaineers, improving him to 1-0.
Vermont will be home again on Sunday night, as they are scheduled to face the Danbury Westerners for the second time in four days. The game starts at 6:30 p.m. and can be heard on CBS Sports 1240-AM WSKI or online through The NECBL Broadcast Network.
