Bridgeport Bluefish News Release
(Waldorf, MD - July 20, 2015) - The Bridgeport Bluefish (8-3, 34-47) defeated by the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (6-5, 48-33) 5-4 at Regency Furniture Stadium on Monday night in the opener of a four game series. The Bluefish have now won ten of their last 13 games overall, and remain in first place in the Second Half Liberty Division Standings, a game and a half ahead of the Somerset Patriots.
Bridgeport Starting Pitcher Scott Maine picked up a no-decision, pitching five and two-thirds innings, allowing four runs on seven hits, walking five, striking out six, and surrendering two home runs. Southern Maryland Starting Pitcher Brian Grening (3-6) suffered the loss, tossing six and one-third innings, giving up five runs (four earned runs) on four hits, walking three, striking out three, and serving up two home runs. Chad Povich (1-1) was credited with the win in relief, going two-thirds of an inning, retiring both batters he faced. Patrick Mincey shut the door with a scoreless ninth inning, striking out one, earning his team leading 15th save, while lowering his ERA to 1.48
Bridgeport took the 1-0 lead off Grening just three batters into the ballgame on a solo home run by Welington Dotel, his fifth roundtripper of the season. Southern Maryland answered right back in the bottom of the first to take the 2-1 lead off Maine on a two-run blast by Gustavo Molina. The Blue Crabs backstop now leads the ballclub with 11 big flies and 42 runs batted in.
Trailing 4-1 in the top half of the seventh inning, the Bluefish put up a four spot to grab a 5-4 lead. Wilson Batista started the rally with a one out double to right field off Grening. Jobduan Morales followed with a two-run home run, and Bridgeport was within a single run at 4-3. The switch-hitting catcher 'touched em all' for the third time this season. Andres Rodriguez kept the hit parade going with a single to center field, and that was it for Grening. In came Cody Eppley out of the Southern Maryland bullpen, and he proceeded to walk Brandon Jones. Luis Rodriguez drove home Andres Rodgriguez with a run scoring single, and just like that the game was tied, and the go-ahead run in the person of Brandon Jones was 90 feet away at third base, but not for long. Jones would hustle down the line and score the eventual winning run on a wild pitch from Eppley, and Bridgeport erased a three run deficit with a crooked number on the scoreboard and would hold on for the come from behind victory. The Bluefish have now won four consecutive games over the First Half Freedom Division Champion Blue Crabs. Batista led the way with two hits on the evening for the Bridgeport.
The Bluefish return to the Ballpark at Harbor Yard on Friday, July 24th when they welcome in their cross-sound rival Long Island Ducks for a three game weekend set as the 2015 Ferry Cup Series continues. Five-time World Series Champion Paul O'Neill will guest manage the team on a very exciting Friday evening in the Park City. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
