Inland Empire 66ers News Release
Lake Elsinore, CA - Wynn Pelzer pitched five strong innings and the Lake Elsinore Storm rallied for four runs with two out in the fourth inning to take the series opener over the Inland Empire 66ers, 5-3, Thursday night at The Diamond.
Pitching with a 1-0 lead, Inland Empire starter Tim Sexton cruised through the first three innings as he kept the Storm without a hit. After getting two outs in the fourth, Felix Carrasco hit an opposite field homer to left to tie the game. Logan Forsyth and Danny Payne followed with consecutive singles before Yefri Carvajal knocked in Forsyth to give the Storm the lead with a base hit to right. Beamer Wells followed with the biggest blow, a two-run double to center, extending Lake Elsinore's lead to 4-1.
It looked promising in the second inning when the 66ers manufactured a run to stake Sexton the early lead. Scott Van Slyke went to right for a leadoff double and came in to score on Christian Lara's sacrifice fly to make it 1-0 Sixers.
Trailing 5-1 in the eighth, the 66ers rallied for two runs when Trayvon Robisnon scorched and RBI triple then came in to score when Adolfo Gonzalez reached on an error from Beamer Weems at second.
Edaurdo Perez followed with a double before Steven Caseres walked with one out, loading the bases for Preston Mattingly. Bryan Oland was summoned from the bullpen to shut the door, and he struck out Mattingly and retired Lara on a groundout to end the Sixers' final threat. Oland worked the ninth for his fourth save.
Pelzer (2-0) limited the 66ers to a run on one hit and two walks while striking out four in five innings.
Sexton (1-1) pitched better than his final line indicated: four runs on six hits in five innings. He recorded a season-high five strikeouts and didn't walk a batter.
The 66ers and Storm reunite at 7:05 p.m. Friday. LHP Alberto Bastardo (1-1, 2.04) takes the hill for the 66ers while the Storm counter with Corey Kluber (2-1, 2.00). Inland Empire returns home on Tuesday, April 28 to face the High Dessert Mavericks for a $2 Tuesday. Fans can get $2 seats anywhere in the park, excluding Executive Box, $2 parking, and $2 beers.
