New Britain Bees News Release

(Central Islip, NY) - The New Britain Bees (32-27) defeated the Long Island Ducks (36-23) 8-5 at Bethpage Ballpark on Thursday evening to take the rubber game of a three-game midweek series between intra-division foes.

New Britain starting pitcher Giovanni Soto registered a no-decision in the matchup after allowing four runs on eight hits in four and one-third innings on the mound while striking out five and tossing a wild pitch. Long Island starting pitcher Kevin McAvoy (0-1) suffered the loss, giving up six runs (four earned runs) on three hits across four innings pitched, walking and striking out four and also hitting a batter and throwing a wild pitch. Jim Fuller closed the ballgame out in the bottom half of the ninth inning to secure his team-leading eighth save of the season.

New Britain took a 1-0 lead versus McAvoy in the top of the second thanks to an RBI double into the left field corner off the bat of Tyler Clark that enabled Rando Moreno to score after he singled and stole second base with one away. The visitors made it 3-0 in their favor in the top of the third courtesy of a run-scoring groundout from Alejandro De Aza that plated Darren Ford after he was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame and later stole one of his two bases on the night (giving him a club-best 12 bags swiped overall), and a sacrifice fly by Jason Rogers that brought in Ozzie Martinez. The Bees sent eight men to the plate in the top of the fifth, scoring four more times to open up a 7-1 cushion with the heart of the lineup doing the damage by way of two-run double from Rogers that was sandwiched between an RBI two-base hit by De Aza and a run-scoring base knock from Jonathan Galvez. Clark capped of a multi-hit performance in the top of the eighth as the New Britain backstop cracked a solo home run to left field which put the boys from the Hardware City out in front 8-4, the third roundtripper of the campaign for the six-year professional. The offensive success as of late has been one of the many storylines, but it is the bullpen that continues to shine as winning pitcher Tyler Danish (2-0) retired all five batters he faced on the night. In the last six games, the Bees relief corps has surrendered just two runs in 19.1 innings pitched (0.93 ERA), while registering 16 strikeouts, with New Britain going 5-1 during that dominant stretch. De Aza, Rogers, and Clark each had a pair of hits in the triumph.

The Bees return to New Britain Stadium on Monday, July 1st when they host the Liberty Division rival Somerset Patriots in the opener of a five-game series and eight-game homestand to close out the First Half of the 2019 Regular Season schedule. First pitch is slated for 6:35 P.M. It will be another Martin Rosol Dollar Monday in the Hardware City, as the Bees will offer ONE DOLLAR FIELD BOX TICKETS AND ONE DOLLAR MARTIN ROSOL HOT DOGS to all guests!
