Four-Run Fifth Inning Helps RailCats Take Game 3 May 29th 2017, 01:03
05/28/2017 9:03 PM - GARY, Indiana -- The AirHogs dropped the rubber match of their series with the Gary SouthShore RailCats at US Steel Yard Sunday evening, falling in the finale by a final of 5-1. Ryne Willard picked up an RBI single, and Michael Freeman struck out 6 in 3.1 innings of relief in the loss.
The AirHogs boarded 4 over the 1st 2 innings vs. Gary's lefty starter Alex Gunn. After doubling in the 2nd, Ryan Wagner scored on Willard's line drive base hit to right to make it 1-0 Texas.
Starter Griffin Russell held the RailCats to just 1 hit over his 1st 3 innings before surrendering a run and stranding 2 men in scoring position in the 4th. In the 5th, he allowed doubles to Andy DeJesus and Kris Goodman and a single to Chase Harris before exiting the contest with the score 3-1. Jacob Morris surrendered 2 more tallies before the inning was out as Gary ran the score to 5-1. The RailCats racked up 5 hits and 3 walks in their 5th turn at bat.
The AirHogs were able to muster just 2 base hits just against Gunn after the 2nd. The starter went 7 innings, striking out 6 on his way to his 1st win. Braulio Torres-Perez and Drasen Johnson fired scoreless 8th and 9th innings to close out the RailCats' 6th win in the last 7 games. Frank Martinez finished 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs to lead the way to their 2nd series win in a row.
In his longest relief appearance of the year, Freeman starred, stranding the bases loaded in the 5th and allowing only 1 hit -- a seeing-eye single -- from the 6th through the 8th. The 6 strikeouts were a season-high for a single appearance by an AirHogs reliever.
The AirHogs (4-6) travel to Lincoln to take on the Saltdogs (4-6) in a 3-game set starting tomorrow at Haymarket Park. LHP James Russell is expected to start Game 1 for the AirHogs vs. RHP Seth Webster for Lincoln. 1st pitch is scheduled for 6:45 pm. A live broadcast will be available at mixlr.com/TXAirHogs.
