Savannah Sand Gnats News Release

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Gnats finally got back on the winning track with a 6-4 win over Kannapolis. What looked to be a costly base running error in the eighth inning turned into an improbable blessing for the Gnats.

With Savannah trailing 4-3 and runners on first and second, Ofilio Castro singled up the middle. Sand Gnats runners Edgardo Baez and Devin Ivany both found themselves caught up at third base. Luckily for Savannah, as Ivany headed back toward second, Kannapolis third baseman Javier Castillo caught the relay throw and threw it past the second baseman and into the right centerfield gap. Both runners scored, and Castro made his way all the way around the bases to put the Gnats up 6-4.

Brett Campbell came in in the ninth to nail down his 11th save of the season.

The Sand Gnats received another strong starting pitching performance as Collin Balester went five innings, struck out five and gave up only one run, which was unearned.

The Sand Gnats have the day off on Sunday as they travel to Asheville. The eight-game road trip ends with a four-game set with the Hickory Crawdads. The Sand Gnats will return home Tuesday, June 7 against the Rome Braves. Tickets for the Gnats remaining 2005 home games are available online at www.sandgnats.com or by calling the team box office at 912-351-9150.
