Forward Madison Drops Match to Central Valley in Front of Record Crowd

June 3, 2023 - United Soccer League One (USL1)
Forward Madison FC News Release

Forward Madison FC was back home against Central Valley Fuego FC at historic Breese Stevens Field for a weekend USL League One Match. Tonight's match doubled as the Club's Pride Night, with the Trek Pride Ride, a free bicycle ride around Madison, occurring before the match. FMFC also released their Pride Top, which will be worn before every match in June. The match kicked off just after 7pm CT. An FMFC record 4,924 fans were in attendance for the contest.

The match started with Forward Madison on the front foot and Central Valley content with absorbing pressure. The Fuego defense and midfield sat back, with FMFC firing two early corners into the opposing box. For much of the first half, the Flamingos controlled the pace and possession of the match, slowly and methodically trying to carve out chances. In the 33rd minute, Stephen Payne beat his defender to the end line, crossing in a dangerous ball that fell to the feet of Christian Chaney. Chaney was unable to control the ball, but the 'Mingos kept their foot on the gas. The breakthrough for FMFC came in the 42nd minute when a through ball played by Mauro Cichero found Chaney, who danced around Fuego defenders to put it in the top left of the net. In the first minute of added time at the end of the first half, Chaney played a no-look touch to Nazeem Bartman, who slotted the shot just wide of the net. The first half ended with the hosts up 1-0.

The second half began right where the first left off, with FMFC playing a high line and forcing play into the final third of the pitch. Chaney continued to cause problems for the Fuego backline, holding up play and setting up FMFC attacks. Wolfgang Prentice, Eric Conerty, and Jayden Onen were brought on in the 67th minute to help Matt Glaeser's side see out the match. Against the run of play, Central Valley won a corner in the 74th minute, which they then converted to a goal off a header from Zahir Vasquez to level the match. With the momentum now in their favor, Central Valley turned to attack and won themselves a penalty kick off of a Timmy Mehl challenge in the 83rd minute. Alexis Cerritos stepped up to the spot and fired it left as Bernd Schipmann went right, giving Central Valley the one goal lead late in the match. FMFC threw numbers forward to try for an equalizer, but were unable to fashion a goal before the final whistle sounded. The match ended with Central Valley getting the 2-1 win on the road.

Next up, Forward Madison will travel south to play Chattanooga Red Wolves SC on Wednesday, June 7th, at 6:30pm before returning home for a match on Saturday, June 10th at 7pm.
