Forward Madison FC News Release
Forward Madison FC has re-signed Madison native Carl Schneider to its 2020 roster, the club announced Tuesday. Schneider, a 27-year-old fullback, grew up in the city, playing for La Follette High School, the Madison 56ers and the University of Wisconsin-Madison before embarking on his professional career.
According to head coach Daryl Shore, keeping local talent on the roster shows Forward's commitment to growing soccer in its surrounding community.
"It's important that we continue to build our club both on and off the field," Shore said. "When you have players of quality that come from your city and your state, it's important that you keep them on your team."
Schneider, who was named the Wisconsin State Journal's player of the year while at La Follette, spent four seasons at UW-Madison before moving to Swedish team IFK Amal. Last year, Schneider became the first Madisonian to join Forward Madison, appearing in 10 USL League One matches.
For Schneider, the opportunity to represent his hometown could inspire the next generation of young athletes like him.
"I've been playing soccer in Madison my whole life, so having the chance to play for
Forward Madison means a lot to me," Schneider said. "I hope that kids growing up here today will be able to look up to me and see that they can do it too."
According to Shore, Schneider had to adjust to playing at a professional level in 2019, and now has a foundation built going into 2020.
"It took Carl a little while to get caught up with the speed of things last year, but he ended up starting a number of games for us and exceeded our expectations," Shore said. "Every day in training he brings a great attitude, he brings a great work ethic. It's guys like that who you want on your team."
