Boston Breakers News Release
HANOVER, Mass. (Nov. 17, 2014) - The Boston Breakers announced today that forward Lianne Sanderson will not return to the club for the 2015 NWSL season. Due to her national team commitments prior to the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup, Sanderson has decided to remain in England to focus on her preparations without the physical and mental strain of flying back and forth between Boston and England.
"We completely understand Lianne's decision based on how hard it was for her last year with all of the back-and-forth travel of competing for her national team and that will only be higher in 2015," Boston Breakers general manager Lee Billiard said. "Obviously, we are disappointed not to have her but we feel that we have made several significant signings to fill the void."
The Breakers will retain the NWSL rights to Sanderson, who is currently playing with Apollon Limassol in the Cypriot First Division.
Sanderson played two seasons with the Breakers, making her debut April 14, 2013. During her career in Boston, Sanderson started 38 of her 41 games played, scoring 10 goals and adding 10 assists. Her five goals in 2014 ranked Sanderson third on the team.
In 2013, the 26-year-old led the Breakers in assists (seven) and tied for second on the team in goals scored (five). She was named the team's Most Valuable Player, as voted on by teammates and staff, and garnered NWSL Player of the Week honors in Week 7, assisting on all three Breakers goals in a 3-0 win over the Washington Spirit.
"Thank you to all the staff, my teammates, and the Breakers fans for everything over the last two years. I wish you every success in 2015," Sanderson said. "Boston is an unbelievable city, Boston Strong."
Sanderson, a native of London, returned to the England's Women's National Team in January 2014 after a three-year hiatus and has since helped lead England to the finals of the 2014 Cyprus Cup and a berth into the 2015 FIFA Women's World Cup.
