Fort Worth Rallies to End 'Snakes Streak
May 24, 2006 - American Association (AA)
St. Joseph Blacksnakes News Release
St. Joseph, MO-The Blacksnakes grabbed an early lead like the night before, but Fort Worth would storm back and the Cats would strike for seven unanswered runs in a 7-3 Cats win. The 'Snakes (5-7) saw their four-game winning streak snapped despite outhitting Fort Worth (7-5) 11-10.
St. Joe would get to Fort Worth starter Cory Walters for three runs on five hits in the second to go ahead 3-0. Cody Nowlin's lead-off double was followed by a Jake Whitesides single before Denver Kitch knocked in Nowlin with a single to make it 1-0. Jefferson Infante then singled home Whitesides making it 2-0 for the 'Snakes. Scooter Jordan loaded the bases with a bunt base hit before an out was recorded and St. Joe was looking for a big frame. But they would only get one more on a Jimmy Mojica sacrifice fly and settled for a 3-0 lead.
But that would be all the offense would get this afternoon.
Fort Worth would peck away, as they did in the opener, with a run in the fourth before striking for four in the sixth while knocking out starter Jamie Tricoglou. Tricoglou was outstanding, but in the sixth a couple bloop hits, a bunt single and an error were mixed in to the rally and Fort Worth took their first lead, 5-3.
They would add two more in the seventh when Scooter Jordan and Jake Whitesides bumped each other going for what turned in to a two-run double and the Cats had opened it up to 7-3. St. Joe would load the bases with two outs in the ninth but there was no magical come back on this day.
Tricoglou (1-2) went 5.1 innings and allowed eight hits and five runs-three earned-while taking the loss. Cory Walters (1-2) earned the win going five innings for Fort Worth with Joel Kirsten picking up the save with four scoreless innings.
The series and homestand wrap up Thursday night at 7:05pm. It is Thirsty Thursday at the ballpark with 12 oz Miller Lite drafts for just $1. RHP Mark Nussbeck (0-1) will not be able to make his scheduled start due to shoulder soreness so RHP Josh Jarman (0-0) will take his place against RHP Luke Hochevar (0-1) for the Cats. The gates open at 6pm and our broadcast begins at 6:45pm with the Heartland Health Pre-Game Show on www.stjoeblacksnakes.com.
