Quad City Mallards News Release
Moline, IL â The Fort Wayne Komets left little room on the ice for the Mallards to operate their offense Wednesday night, as Quad City's six-game winning streak ended in a 3-1 defeat to the Komets, in United Hockey League action at The MARK of the Quad Cities.
Defenseman John Batten scored the only goal for the Mallards, one-timing a slap shot, on a feed from right wing J.F. Dufour, past Fort Wayne netminder Tom Lawson early in the second period to tie the game at 1-1. Defenseman Bob Quinnell also assisted on the goal.
Komets defenseman Kelly Perrault had given his team a 1-0 lead just 32 seconds into the game with a slap shot that found its way into the top corner of the net over Joe Dimaline's left shoulder.
After Batten's tying goal, Fort Wayne got the game winner in the second period on a 2-on-1 break, with center Colin Chaulk finding winger Bobby Stewart, who scored his 37th goal of the season. Sean Venedam added an insurance goal three minutes later, scoring on a two-man advantage.
Dimaline made 35 saves in the defeat. The Mallards were unable to convert on any of their nine power play chances and are now 6-for-57 (10.5%) with the man advantage against the Komets this season.
Quad City played the game without defenseman Dylan Mills, who was called up to the American Hockey League's Chicago Wolves, a Mallards affiliate, earlier in the day. Defenseman Clint Cabana made his Mallards debut. He signed on Monday and saw his first game action since Oct. 26, when he was with the West Coast Hockey League's San Diego Gulls.
The Mallards maintained their seven-point lead over idle Missouri for the Western Conference lead, but dropped to third place in the overall UHL standings, two points behind Fort Wayne. Quad City can make up those two points with a win in its next game, Friday at Fort Wayne. Game time is 6:35 p.m. (Central time), with the TMI Mallards Warmup getting things started at 6:05 p.m. on WOC TalkRadio 1420 and www.qcmallards.com.
