Dayton Dragons News Release
Fort Wayne, Ind.-Cole Cummings belted a tie-breaking two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift the Fort Wayne TinCaps to a 4-2 victory over the Dayton Dragons on Tuesday night. The game was the opener to a six-game series in Fort Wayne.
The loss was the Dragons sixth straight and dropped their second half record to 12-29. They are 51-56 overall. Fort Wayne improved to 18-25 in the second half and 45-64 overall.
Game Recap: The Dragons took a 2-0 lead in the third inning when Michel Triana bounced a single to center field and Steven Leyton followed with a home run to left. The homer was Leyton's second of the year with the Dragons and his 10th this season in the Reds organization. It was also Leyton's second in the last two games with Dayton.
But the Dragons could not mount a threat against Fort Wayne's second pitcher of the night, Gabe Morales, who entered the game to start the fourth inning. Morales did not allow a hit or walk over four scoreless frames, striking out eight, as the TinCaps battled back.
Fort Wayne scored one run in the fifth and then tied the game in the sixth on a solo home run by Brandon Valenzuela to even the score at 2-2.
In the bottom of the eighth, Fort Wayne's Cole Cummings connected on a two-run home run with one out against Dayton reliever Dennis Boatman that gave the TinCaps a 4-2 lead.
Tyler Callihan opened the ninth with a double for the Dragons, the team's first hit since the third inning. But the next three hitters were retired to end the game.
Dragons starting pitcher Thomas Farr pitched well, going six innings for the third consecutive outing. He allowed two runs on five hits with no walks and seven strikeouts. He was not involved in the decision. Boatman (0-2) worked two innings and was charged with the loss, allowing the tie-breaking runs in the eighth.
Callihan was 2 for 4 with two doubles for the Dragons. Leyton's home run was his fifth extra base hit in his last four games.
Up Next: The Dragons play at Fort Wayne again on Wednesday night in the second game of the six-game series. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m. Chase Petty (0-2, 6.75) will start for the Dragons. The next home series at Day Air Ballpark in the heart of the Water Street District begins on Tuesday, August 30 when the Dragons host Cedar Rapids at 7:05 p.m.
