Aberdeen Wings News Release
The Aberdeen Wings, proud members of the North American Hockey League are pleased to announce that former Wings player Liam McGing has made a Division-I commitment to Arizona State University.
McGing, now the 28th current/former Wings player to make a Division-I commitment, played in 43 games for the Aberdeen Wings over the 2012-2013 NAHL season. He tallied 5 assists while helping his team make a late season push. He was drafted by the Oshawa Generals of the OHL in the 10th Round in 2011. He chose not to sign with Oshawa to retain his amateur status and pursue the college route.
The Chicago native was selected by the Chicago Steel of the USHL following his season in Aberdeen. He played in 42 games for the Steel before moving on to the Muskegon Lumberjacks. This season he has compiled 1 goal and 2 assists in 31 games.
"I'm excited to make my commitment to Arizona State University and look forward to helping the hockey program get off on solid ground at the Division I level," said McGing. "The coaching staff has a great vision for the program, and I believe that they can build it into a winner for many years to come."
Arizona State University was granted Division I status. Arizona State's transitional period begins next season in playing a hybrid schedule of Division I and American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) competition followed by a full Division I independent schedule in 2016-17. To complete the transition, the Sun Devils plan to join full Division I hockey membership beginning in the 2017-18 season that includes team induction into conference competition. Currently, Arizona State plays in the ACHA Division I and are coming off a 2014 National Championship.
