Former Steel Forward Adam Fantilli Wins Hobey Baker Memorial Award

GENEVA, ILLINOIS- Former Chicago Steel forward Adam Fantilli was named recipient of the 2023 Hobey Baker Memorial Award, given to the top NCAA men's hockey player, becoming the third former Steel player to win the prestigious honor.

Fantilli recently finished an impressive freshman season with University of Michigan, leading all NCAA D1 college hockey players in points with 65 as well as points per game (1.83) becoming the third-highest scoring player in the last 20 years, tying for first in goals (30), and finishing fifth in assists (35).

One of the top prospects in the 2023 NHL Draft, Fantilli played two seasons for the Steel (2020-2021 and 2021-2022) and currently ranks eighth in career points for the Steel with 110 points (55G, 55A). In his rookie 2020-2021 season, Fantilli was named to the All-USHL Rookie Second Team and was named Clark Cup Final MVP after recording nine points (8G, 1A) in eight playoff games in helping lead the team to a Clark Cup Championship.

In 2021-2022, Fantilli was named All-USHL First Team, registering 74 points (37G, 37A) in 54 games.

Drew LeBlanc (Steel 2006-2008) is the most recent Steel alumnus to win the award in 2013 for St. Cloud State University after registering 50 points (13G, 37A) in 42 games. In two seasons with the Steel, LeBlanc notched 59 points (19G, 40A) in 72 games.

Just two years prior in 2011, teammate Andy Miele (Steel 2006-2008) became the first Steel alumnus to earn the honor after recording 71 points (24G, 47A) in 39 games played for Miami University. In two seasons with the Steel, Miele tallied 83 points (43G, 40A) in 74 games.

Earlier this year, Fantilli won a gold medal with Team Canada at the 2023 IIHF World Junior Championship. With Michigan, Fantilli recorded 19 multi-point games this season.

This weekend, the Steel faceoff against Youngstown Phantoms at Covelli Centre as the team's battle for playoff seeding in the Eastern Conference race.

Next weekend, the Steel travel to Dubuque on Friday, April 14 before returning home to battle Dubuque once again at Fox Valley Ice Arena on Saturday, April 15 for Fan Appreciation Night featuring at team photo giveaway courtesy of K&M printing and hundreds of prizes for fans attending the game. Following Saturday's game, fans are invited to participate in the final Skate with the Steel of the season.
