Former Steamwheelers Lineman Montgomery to Vegas

DAVENPORT, Iowa — And so it has begun. After the first four seasons of arenafootball2 play, there have been a total of 17 former Quad City Steamwheelers who have made the jump to the next level. On Friday, former Steamwheelers offensive lineman/defensive lineman Jerry Montgomery became the 18th former ‘Wheelers star to make the leap as he signed with the Las Vegas Gladiators of the Arena Football League.

Last season, Montgomery joined the Steamwheelers four games into the season and in ten games, he recorded 9.5 tackles (seven solo), two tackles for a loss, one sack, a pass break up, while forcing one fumble, recovered another and had a sack for a safety. He was also third on the team with 10 quarterback hurries.

He joined the Steamwheelers for their game on April 24, 2004, at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers and in his af2 debut, had 1.5 tackles (one solo).

Montgomery was a four-year letter winner out of the University of Iowa and earned the Coaches Appreciation Award for defense his senior year. In those four seasons he recorded 135 tackles (69 solo) including 20 tackles for a loss. He had five sacks, six quarterback hurries and six pass breakups to go along with three fumble recoveries.

Montgomery started in 32 games and played in 41 games throughout his career. He battled an ankle injury his senior year and was one of four true freshmen that saw action in 1998.

After his stellar career at Iowa, he entered camp with the New Orleans Saints of the NFL. Montgomery was a training camp cut and then made his way to Chicago to join the AFL's Rush.

Montgomery played all season with the Rush and recorded four tackles and a quarterback hurry. From there he went on to the Buffalo Bills (NFL) mini-camp. Then Montgomery started this AFL season with the Colorado Crush on their practice squad.

He attended Virgin Valley (Nev.) High School where he was the Nevada State Player of the Year and earned Street & Smith all-American honors in two consecutive years. He was first team all-conference and all-state and played in the Nevada all-star game.
