Former SIU Salukis Join the Rough Riders

Peoria Rough Riders Head Coach and Director of Football Operations Chuck Goodwin is proud to announce the signings of WR/DB Lavar Stepter and FB/LB Andrew Franklin.

SIU Alumnus and Maywood, IL native Lavar Stepter will join the Peoria Rough Riders for the 2006 campaign. The 5'10", 210 lbs DB spent two seasons on the Carbondale campus recording 65 tackles, 3 interceptions and 5 forced fumbles. Before joining the Salukis, Stepter attended Harper College in Palatine, IL. Lavar was a two-time All-conference performer and an NJCAA All-American in 1999 for the Hawks. While at Harper Lavar collected 150 tackles, 11 interceptions, 5 touchdowns and forced 10 fumbles. Most recently Stepter has been playing semi pro ball for the Chicago based Chicago Thunder. In 2004 Lavar was named Chicago Football League Special Teams MVP and Playoffs Defensive MVP.

Joining Stepter will be fellow SIU-Carbondale grad Andrew Franklin. Originally from Lawton, OK, Franklin transferred from Garden City Community College to SIU-Carbondale. The 6' 2" 245 lbs. FB/LB earned All-Conference Honorable Mention from the Gateway Football Conference in his senior season of 2004. During that season he recorded 25 tackles, 9 assists and 3 sacks.
