
Former Royals G Grubauer Wins Stanley Cup with Washington

Reading, PA - Former Reading Royals goaltender Philipp Grubauer became the fifth former Royals player to win the Stanley Cup Wednesday as the Washington Capitals defeated the Vegas Golden Knights, 4-3, in Game 5 of the 2018 Stanley Cup Final at T-Mobile Arena. Grubauer played for the Royals in 2012-13. This season for Washington, he appeared in 35 regular season games (15-10-3 record, 2.35 GAA, .923 sv.%) and a pair of playoff contests. This Stanley Cup Final featured the first-ever matchup of former Royals players; Vegas defenseman Deryk Engelland skated for the Royals in 2006-07.

Grubauer is 27 years old, stands 6-foot-1 and weighs 191 pounds. He has played in six NHL seasons for the Capitals and made his NHL debut in 2012-13 (2 GP). That same season, the native of Rosenheim, Germany played 26 games for Reading, registering a 19-5-1-0 record, 2.30 goals against average and .912 save percentage.
Former Royals Head Coach Derek Clancey won the Stanley Cup three times as a scout with the Pittsburgh Penguins.
