January 13, 2004 - California League (CalL1)
High Desert Mavericks News Release

Adelanto, CA – The High Desert Mavericks and Milwaukee Brewers have announced the majority of the High Desert coaching staff for the upcoming 2004 season.

Although a Manager has yet to be named, all other positions have been filled with some very familiar names to Mavericks fans.

Stanton Cameron, who was a prominent member of the Mavs last championship team in 1997, has been named Hitting Coach for the 2004 season. Cameron will be joined on the staff by three returnees from the 2003 season, Pitching Coach John Curtis, Trainer Matt Toth and Strength and Conditioning Coordinator Bryan Newman.

Cameron, who appeared in 139 games for the Mavericks in 1997, set career highs with 33 home runs and 113 RBIs, while posting a .300 batting average. His career year in 1997 included a monster three-run home run in the third and final game of the League Championship Series. The Mavs won that game 3-2, giving them a three-game sweep of San Bernardino to win their third Cal League title in their first year as an Arizona Diamondback affiliate.

Originally drafted as an outfielder in the 24th round of the 1987 draft by the New York Mets, Cameron played in the Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Texas, Cleveland, Kansas City and Arizona systems, before playing Independent ball over the final years of his career.

Cameron officially retired after the 2003 season, spending time with San Angelo of the Central League and Kansas City of the Northern League. He was a lifetime .269 hitter with 167 homers and 661 RBIs.

Pitching Coach John Curtis, who joined the Mavs midway through the 2003 campaign, is back in his first full year with the Brewers organization.

Matt Toth begins his third year in the Milwaukee system, and will serve as the Mavs' trainer for the second straight season. Toth spent the 2002 campaign in the same role with the Beloit Snappers of the Midwest League. Toth spent 2001 in the Chicago Cubs organization before joining the Brewers.

Strength and Conditioning Coach Bryan Newman, who also joined the Mavs last season during the middle of the year, will return for his first full year with the Mavs.

The 2004 California League regular season begins on Thursday, April 8th, as the Mavs travel to Lancaster to take on the JetHawks. Opening Night at Mavericks Stadium is set for Monday, April 12th, as the Mavs face the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05.

Season Tickets, Mini-Plans and Group Outings are on sale now by calling 760-246-MAVS.
