Richmond Kickers News Release
RICHMOND, VA - (Monday, March 21, 2006) - The Richmond Kickers are pleased to announce the return of former Kickers defender Ray Goodlett after a two-year hiatus from soccer. Specific terms of the contract were not disclosed.
Goodlett first joined the Kickers halfway through the 2001 season and made 60 appearances for 4,239 minutes over the next three seasons (2001-2003). He was named to the USL First Division Team of the Week in 2002 and was an integral part of the defensive unit that recorded seven shutouts, concluding the season as USL First Division finalists. During Goodlett's time away from the Kickers, he studied at the Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California, completing his Certificate of Mission's Theology in June 2004. Currently, he is the Director of Every Nation Campus Ministries at the University of Richmond, where he acts as a mentor to students, helping them find or continue their faith.
"We are truly delighted to have a player and person of Ray's caliber back with our squad. To me, he epitomizes what it means to be a âRichmond Kicker'," comments Richmond Kickers Vice President & General Manager Paul Sterbenz. "Ray was a significant cog to our 2002 USL Finalist run and has immediately proved that despite taking two years away from the professional game he might be hungrier and more capable then ever."
"I have missed the players, the fans, the Kickers organization and the game itself," comments Goodlett. "I'm really excited about coming back."
Prior to joining the Kickers, Goodlett was signed by the Hershey Wildcats (A-League) in 1999 and played in 17 games with the club, tallying one assist. Called up to play with D.C. United on July 25, 1999, Goodlett's playing rights were acquired permanently by United mid-way through the 2000 season. He made his MLS debut on July 15th during D.C. United's 2-1 road win over the Los Angeles Galaxy and recorded three starts in four appearances with the Black-and-Red by year's end.
A graduate of Howard University in Washington, D.C., Goodlett scored six goals and tallied 11 assists for 23 points over four seasons. Starting 66 of 67 matches played for the Bison, he was named first team All-Mid-Continent Conference after the 1996 season.
