Former Kernels help Angels sweep Red Sox in ALDS

Six former Cedar Rapids Kernels helped the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim sweep the Boston Red Sox, 3-0, in the American League Divisional Series and advance to the ALCS to face the New York Yankees.

Former Kernel John Lackey allowed four hits over 7.1 IP and struck out four as the Angels shut out the Red Sox, 5-0, in game one last Thursday and in game two on Friday, Erick Aybar was 2-3 with a triple and 3 RBI and Kevin Jepsen pitched 2/3 inning of relief as the Angels beat Boston, 4-1.

In the deciding third game yesterday, Mike Napoli was 1-2 with a double and Aybar recorded the final out on a soft line-drive to short as the Angels rallied for five runs over the final two innings to complete the sweep, 7-6.

In addition to Aybar, Lackey, Napoli and Jepsen, five more former Kernels are on the Angels' post-season roster: Ervin Santana, Joe Saunders, Jeff Mathis, Bobby Wilson and Howie Kendrick for a total of nine former Kernels.

The best-of-seven ALCS against the Yankees is scheduled to start Friday, October 16 at a time TBA at Yankee Stadium in New York. The Yankees will have home field advantage based on a better overall season record. The Yankees (103-59) and Angels (97-65) finished 1-2 as far as wins in the AL.
