Kane County Cougars News Release
GENEVA, IL - Boston first baseman Adrian Gonzalez, a Kane County Cougars alumnus from the 2001 Midwest League Championship team, has won his first-ever Silver Slugger Award. Gonzalez edged other top sluggers and American League first baseman in Mark Teixeira and Miguel Cabrera, the latter of which played with Gonzalez at Kane County in 2001. The Silver Slugger, which was first awarded in 1980, is distributed to the best offensive players at each position in both the American and National Leagues.
In his first season with the Red Sox, Gonzalez batted .338, which was a career high. Gonzalez and Texas' Michael Young were MLB co-leaders with 213 hits. Since debuting in the major leagues in 2004, Gonzalez has driven in 100 or more runs in a season four times. Despite years of constant production with San Diego, Gonzalez faced stiff competition in Albert Pujols and Prince Fielder for year-end awards such as the Silver Slugger.
Past Silver Slugger Award winners who played at Kane County include a pair of three-time winners: Miguel Cabrera and Edgar Renteria. Another former Cougar, Andre Ethier, received a Silver Slugger Award in 2009.
