Former Jam Guard Mateen Cleaves Signs With Nets

(Bakersfield, Calif., Oct. 3, 2007) - The New Jersey Nets announced that former Bakersfield Jam guard Mateen Cleaves has been signed to a non-guaranteed contract as a free agent and has joined the club in their training camp. As per Nets team policy, terms of the contract were not released.

"We are extremely happy for Mateen and wish him luck in his efforts," says Michael Hirsch, team president, Bakersfield Jam. "This is a classic example of how the NBA Development League can help propel players to where they want to be."

Cleaves appeared in 22 games, 15 of them starts, with the Jam during the 2006-2007 season, averaging 16.5 ppg and led the team with 9.0 assists per game. The 30-year old registered six double digit assist games during last year's campaign, including a season-high 16 on March 24 versus Colorado. Cleaves also chipped in 2.5 rpg and just over one steal each contest.

A first round draft pick (fourteenth overall) in 2000, Cleaves has averaged 3.6 ppg and 1.9 apg during his six-year NBA tenure. His storied college career at Michigan State included winning an NCAA championship in 2000 when he was named the Most Outstanding Player of the Tournament. He was also a two-time Big 10 Player of the Year and three-time Associated Press All-American. Cleaves finished his NCAA career as the Big 10's all-time career assist leader.
