Former Iowa Stars advance to Stanley Cup Finals

DES MOINES, IA - With Saturday night's 2-1 win, the Edmonton Oilers took the best-of-seven series versus the Anaheim Mighty Ducks four-games-to-one, and claimed the Clarence S. Campbell Bowl as Western Conference Champions and three members of the Iowa Stars Inaugural Season team were there to take part in the celebration. Iowa's leading scorer Toby Petersen, defenseman Matt Greene and center Kyle Brodziak, all skaters with Iowa during the 2005-06 regular season, celebrated in Edmonton's Conference win. Edmonton was the Iowa's Stars secondary NHL affiliation this past season.

This is the first time the Oilers have advanced to the Stanley Cup Finals since 1990. That year, they defeated the Boston Bruins four-games-to-one for their fifth Stanley Cup in seven seasons. The Oilers await the winner of the Buffalo Sabres and Carolina Hurricanes series. Carolina currently holds a three-games-to-two lead in the Eastern Conference Finals.

The Iowa Stars leader in several categories, including points (73), games played (79), assists (47), Petersen skated in two of the five games during the Western Conference Finals. In Game Three, May 23rd, the Minneapolis, Minnesota native notched his first career Stanley Cup Playoff goal. Petersen finished with one goal, a 'plus 1' rating, one shot, 7:12 of ice time in Game Three. Overall, he has one goal, a 'plus 1' rating, three shots and just about 13 minutes of total ice time. He finished the 2005-06 Iowa Stars season ranked 17th in the AHL in points, and 20th in assists, and was named the Iowa Stars Most Valuable Player and Community Service Award winner and was selected as the Stars Fan Favorite.

The physical Greene has played in 11 of the Oilers 17 playoff games, recording 20 penalty minutes. The 23 year-old Michigan native skated in 26 games for the Iowa Stars during their inaugural season, notching two goals and five assists. He also appeared in 27 games for Edmonton during the regular season, posting two assists and 43 penalty minutes.

Brodziak completed the 2005-06 season in Iowa with 12 goals and 19 assists: 55(12/19/31). Drafted by the Oilers with their ninth choice in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft, the Alberta native posted one goal and three assists in seven AHL playoff games, including the game-winning goal in Game Six: 7(1/3/4). He made his NHL debut on October 15th, 2005 vs. Calgary and in 10 career NHL games has four penalty minutes: 10(0/0/0)4. He has not yet appeared in a playoff game.
