INDIANAPOLIS - The Indiana Ice announced today that former Indy forward Nic Dowd has signed an entry-level contract with the NHL's Los Angeles Kings.
Dowd has been assigned to the Kings' AHL affiliate, the Manchester Monarchs, and could make his professional debut as early as Friday, April 4 when the Monarchs host the Hartford Wolf Pack.
A native of Huntsville, AL, Dowd was drafted by Los Angeles in the seventh round of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft. He spent the previous four seasons with the St. Cloud State University Huskies, registering 121 points (52G, 69A) in 155 games with the Minnesota institution. The Husky captain led the team in goals (21) during the 2013-14 season while finishing second in points during the past two campaigns.
Prior to his time at St. Cloud, Dowd suited up with the Ice during the 2009-10 season under current Grand Rapids Griffins-AHL head coach Jeff Blashill. He amassed 39 points (16G, 23A) in 46 games while finishing tied for first on the team in game-winning goals. Dowd added an additional six points (2G, 4A) in nine playoff games as Indy marched into the Eastern Conference semifinals before falling to the eventual Clark Cup Champion Green Bay Gamblers.
In addition to his NHL contract, Dowd was also named a Hobey Baker "Hat Trick Finalist" as one of the three remaining candidates for NCAA Div. I hockey's top individual award. Previous winners include Neal Broten, Paul Kariya and Ryan Miller.
Dowd becomes the second Indy alum to ink an NHL contract this week after Adam Erne signed an amateur tryout deal with the Tampa Bay Lightning. Erne was drafted by Tampa Bay in the second round of the 2013 NHL Entry Draft.
The Ice continue the pursuit for their first-ever Anderson Cup Championship this week as they host two of their last three regular-season contests in the "Circle City." Indy welcomes the defending Clark Cup Champion Dubuque Fighting Saints this Wednesday (4/2) for "College Night," presented by Howl at the Moon. The puck drops at Pan Am Pavilion at 7:05 pm.
Indy wraps up the regular-season home schedule on Friday (4/4) with a Bankers Life Fieldhouse matchup with the Green Bay Gamblers on "Hockey for Heart Night," sponsored by St.Vincent Heart Center. The contest is set to start at 7:05 pm.
The 2013-14 regular season concludes on Saturday with a road tilt against the Chicago Steel from the Edge Ice Arena at 8:05 pm.
