Former CHL Official to Train Referees in Netherlands

Published on October 2, 2008 under Central Hockey League (CHL) News Release

The Central Hockey League (CHL) is pleased to recognize former CHL Official Paul DePuydt who recently has been placed in charge of referee development for the First Division of the Netherlands. DePuydt begins his new position this week.

The seven-year CHL veteran referee will not only train officials in the Netherlands but will also officiate games in the Premier League in the country, the Eredivisie. The First Division of the country is the Eerste Divisie which DePuydt will be in charge of officiating supervision.

"This is a good opportunity for Paul and as sorry as we are to lose him on our ice, we are excited about this new position for him," said Wayne Bonney, CHL Supervisor of Officials. "Paul was one of the leaders on our officiating staff and I am sure all of his experience and knowledge of the game will be beneficial in training top level referees in Europe."

During his seven-years in the CHL, DePuydt worked one All-Star Game and three Ray Miron President's Cup Finals series. The former player at the University of Northern Michigan began officiating games when he was just 10-years-old following in the footsteps of his father, John DePuydt, who officiated college hockey for close to 40 years. Although retired, John continues to evaluate and supervise college officials.

"This will be a great challenge for me," said DePuydt. "I have enjoyed my time in the CHL, watching it grow as a league, but am looking forward to going overseas and doing what I can to help train and mold strong officials for the future of the sport."

DePuydt was born in Houghton, Michigan and has most recently called Phenix City, Alabama home.
