Former Cardinals Prospect Greco Signs
July 6, 2002 - Northeast League (NEL)
Adirondack Lumberjacks News Release
Glens Falls, NY- The Adirondack Lumberjacks, of the Northern League, announced today that they have signed RHP Sam Greco to a contract. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
Originally signed as a non-drafted free agent in 2001, Greco, a native of Albany, NY, pitched in the St Louis Cardinal's organization last year for the New Jersey Cardinals of the New York Penn League. In 21 relief appearances, Greco recorded a 1-4 record and a 4.50 ERA. The 22-year-old Greco struck out 29 in 30 innings pitched.
"I feel that Sam will add depth to our bullpen. He throws a good two seam fastball and an above average knuckle-curve that will be effective against right-handed hitter," stated Jack Manager Kash Beauchamp. "I feel that with experience, Sam has the arm to go to the next level."
Greco was released out of spring training this year. The 6-2, 200 pound pitcher is expected to be available to pitch in tonight's game against Quebec.
To make room for Greco on the roster, the Jacks released LHP Kris Keelty. Keelty was signed following an open tryout, but in five games, had allowed nine runs (all earned) for an ERA of 20.25, with a 0-0 record.
The Lumberjacks continue their current home stand with two more games against Quebec, who sit two games ahead of the Jacks in the standings. Game time on Saturday, July 6 is 7 PM, while game time on July 7, is 5 PM. The New Jersey Jackals then come to town to close out the first half for the Jacks.
