
Former BlueClaws First Baseman Howard Named Top First Baseman in Class A

(Lakewood, NJ) Former BlueClaws first baseman Ryan Howard continues to add to his awards this off-season. Howard is one of only 12 players among the 60 full-season Class A teams who has been named to the Topps Class A All-Star Team. Howard is the only Phillies prospect on the squad.
Howard had a terrific season in the Florida State League this year, leading the FSL in homers with 23 and batting average at .304. Howard also was second in the Florida State League in RBI with 82, finishing seven short of winning a triple crown.
Howard, this year was named the top hitting prospect in the Phillies organization, and is rated number three overall in the Philadelphia system by Baseball America.
Howard was one of two Phillies prospects, along with pitcher Gavin Floyd, to play in the Futures Game.
Howard, a fifth-round pick in 2001 from Southwest Missouri State, hit .280 with 19 HR and a club-record 87 RBI in 2002 with the BlueClaws. After this season Howard was added to the Phillies 40-man roster. He's expected to start the 2004 season with Double-A Reading.
