Birmingham Barons News Release

HOOVER, AL - Eighteen former Barons will be in uniform when the Chicago White Sox officially open the big-league portion of Spring Training on Friday, February 26 in Glendale, AZ. An astounding 16 players from the 2009 Barons team are included in that total.

Players must either be on the 40-man roster or receive a non-roster invitation from the big league club to attend camp. Fourteen of the former Barons players are on the 40-man roster while four other former Barons received a non-roster invite.

Mark Buehrle (2000) and Bobby Jenks (2005) head the list of past Birmingham players on the White Sox 40-man roster while the other 12 players all called Birmingham home as recently as 2009.

Pitchers Lucas Harrell, Daniel Hudson, Jhonny Nunez, Brian Omogrosso, Clevelan Santeliz, Sergio Santos and Carlos Torres were key components to a Barons team in 2009 that set the franchise mark for winning percentage (.662) and the modern-franchise record for wins (92). All eight pitchers will report to camp on Sunday, February 21.

The Sporting News and MLBPA selection for last year's Rookie of the Year award, Gordon Beckham will headline an impressive crew of hitters that head to Glendale, AZ. Topps 2009 Double A All-Star, Tyler Flowers, as well as Jayson Nix, Dayan Viciedo and Stefan Gartrell, will join the former first-round pick at the big league camp.

In addition, the Barons 2009 Most Valuable Player, C.J. Retherford along with Jordan Danks, Donny Lucy and Miguel Gonzalez each received a non-roster invite to Spring Training.

The Birmingham Barons have been the Double A affiliate of the Chicago White Sox since 1986, and 2010 will mark the 25th year of that relationship.

The Barons roster will officially be released on Sunday, April 4.

The Barons will open the season against the Carolina Mudcats on Thursday, April 8. Season tickets and mini plans are currently available over the phone or online at Barons.com.
