Force Steams Over St. Louis Into Third Place, 10-8

ST. LOUIS, MO. - The Cleveland Force exploded for a season-high tying 10 goals including a season-high tying six goals in the first half enroute to defeating the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) St. Louis Steamers by a final score of 10- 8 at the Savvis Center. The contest was the third game in four nights for Cleveland. Force goalkeeper and Cleveland Heights native Bayard Elfvin records third victory of season. Cleveland was led by midfielder Gary DePalma and Rene Rivas with two goals apiece giving DePalma 11 goals on the season and 10 for Rivas.

With the victory, the Force took over sole possession of third place in the MISL Standings while improving to 19-16 overall, 9-8 on the road, 4-1 versus the Steamers this season and 44-37 all-time versus St. Louis teams. With the loss, the Steamers dropped their second straight game and fell to 19-18 overall and 11-7 at home.

St. Louis opened the scoring (0-1) when Jeff DiMaria hit a shot that deflected off Cleveland defender Genoni Martinez into the net off the cross from Daryl Doran at 1:20 of the first quarter. The Force tied the game (1-1) when forward Adauto Neto scored the power play goal as he took the entry pass from Martinez and the he spun and buried the shot from the top of the arch at 14:31. Cleveland took its first lead of the game (2-1) when Rivas was streaking down the field and forward Aaron Susi found him with a sweet pass through the penalty area and he connected on the shot at 14:55.

The Steamers evened the score for the second time (2-2) when forward Joe Reiniger converted the penalty kick and power play goal at 1:17 of the second quarter. The Force regained the lead (3-2) when forward Antonio Sutton buried a shot through the legs of St. Louis goalkeeper Brett Philips off the second assist of the game for Susi at 2:07. Cleveland added to their lead of the game (4-2) when DePalma buried a shot from the left wing off the cross from forward and team captain John Ball at 2:36. The Force kept the scoring attack going (5- 2) when Neto stole the ball and then hit a streaking midfielder Kyt Selaidopoulos who knocked home the score at 9:49. Cleveland scored its fourth unanswered goal (6-2) when Martinez buried a shot on the restart from 75-feet away at 10:07. The Steamers cut into the lead (6-3) when Fernando Errecalde tapped in the cross from Matt caution at 14:25.

The Force opened the second half scoring (7-3) when Rivas and Susi hooked up for the second time in the game as Rivas scored his second goal and Susi tallied his third assist of the game at 5:11 of the third quarter. St. Louis quickly responded (7-4) when D.J. Newsom ran down the middle of the field and scored the goal off the cross from Carlos "Chile" Farias just 12 seconds after the Cleveland goal at 5:23. The Force got the lead back up to four (8-4) when DePalma scored his second goal of the game as he nailed a shot through Philip's legs off the feed from defender Neil Gilbert at 10:38. The Steamers cut back into the lead (8-5) when DiMaria scored his second goal off the restart pass from Mariano Bollella at 11:02. St. Louis got a little closer (8-6) when Reiniger scored his second goal of the game on the restart at 12:42.

Cleveland ended a 2-0 run by the Steamers (9-6) when Gilbert scored the goal off the outlet pass and second assist of the game for Ball at 3:59 of the fourth quarter. St. Louis quickly responded (9-7) when Sterling Wescott connected the restart opportunity off the cross from Farias at 4:38. The Force connected on the power play (10-7) when forward and Cleveland native Allen Eller hit a shot that bounced off the far post and came back and hit the near post and then in for the tally at 10:48. The Steamers cut into the lead (10-8) when DiMaria recorded the hat-trick with the sixth attacker on off the feed from Wescott at 14:10.

Cleveland will return home to take on the expansion Chicago Storm on Friday, April 15 at the Wolstein Center.
