Cleveland takes two of final MISL monthly honors
CLEVELAND, OHIO- Cleveland Force defender Genoni Martinez and forward Aaron Susi were selected as the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) Players of the Month for their respective positions for the month of April. This marked the second straight month that Cleveland was awarded a Player of the Month after forward John Ball, goalkeeper Jim Larkin and Martinez all were selected as the Players of the Month for March.
Martinez captures his second straight Defensive Player of the Month honor after posting totals of six goals, 11 points, and 14 blocks in nine April games. The two-time Defender of the Year was a major factor as Cleveland went 7-2 during the month, grabbing the league's #2 playoff seed. That Martinez has made a significant difference cannot be denied: since adding the 30-year-old, the Force has gone 15-5. In just 20 games with Cleveland, the Mexico City native has recorded 34 points (14 goals, 20 assists) and 34 blocks, solidifying his reputation as one of the game's most all-around productive players.
Susi's exploits down the stretch were just as important to Cleveland. The 30-year-old finished April with 16 points in nine appearances. Susi scored at least one point in eight of his nine games, and posted seven multi-point outings. Known mostly as a finisher, the 6-4, 180-pounder found time to turn playmaker in April with nine assists, including a three-assist game on April 10. The San Diego native was named Offensive Player of the Week on April 11. Susi finished the season with 15 goals and 27 points in 17 games with the Force, and 26 goals and 40 points in 35 games overall.
In addition to the April Players of the Month, the Force has taken 13 MISL Player of the Week honors this season after forward Adauto Neto garnered his second straight Offensive Player of the Week on Monday. Besides Neto, Ball, defender Neil Gilbert, defender Matt Johnson, goalkeeper Jim Larkin, defender Genoni Martinez and forward Aaron Susi have all been honored by the MISL this season. Ball has been named Offensive Player of the Week on two occasions while Gilbert was named Defensive Player of the Week on April 11. Johnson garnered the Defensive Player of the Week on February 7 and Larkin has been tabbed as Goalkeeper of the Week on four occasions. Martinez has been honored as Defensive Player of the Week twice while Susi took home Offensive Player of the Week on April 11.
The Force will host the KiXX on Sunday, May 1st at the Wolstein Convocation Center in game two of the two game series with kickoff slated for 5:05 p.m. The series will kickoff on Friday, April 29 when Philadelphia and Cleveland will face off at a neutral site in the first game of a MISL Semifinal Series doubleheader at the Savvis Center in St. Louis, Missouri. The KiXX and Force will meet in the first game scheduled for 6:00 p.m. followed by the number one seed Milwaukee Wave taking on the number four seed St. Louis Steamers at 9:00 p.m. All games are listed in Eastern Standard Time.
