Cleveland Defeats Steamers 10-8

ST. LOUIS, April 10, 2005 - The Cleveland Force traveled to St. Louis on Sunday night and defeated the Steamers by the score of 10-8. The loss drops St. Louis to 19-18 on the season and the Force improve to 19-16. The Steamers are one and half games ahead of Chicago for the fourth and final playoff spot in the MISL standings.

Jeff DiMaria notched the first goal of the game at 1:20 of the first quarter on an assist from Daryl Doran. Cleveland responded on tallies by Adauto Neto and Rene Rivas late in the first quarter to take the lead 2-1.

Joe Reiniger tied the score at 1:17 of the second quarter at 2-2 on a penalty kick after Shaun David was hauled down by Adauto Neto. The Force came back with four unanswered goals in the quarter by Antonio Sutton, Gary DePalma, Kyt Selaidopoulos and Genoni Martinez to take a 6-2 advantage. Fernando Errecalde cut the lead in half for St. Louis when Matt Caution fed him a pass and he beat Cleveland goalkeeper Bayard Elfvin and the Force led 6-3 at the half.

Cleveland pushed their lead to four again when Rivas scored his second goal of the game with Aaron Susi recording his third assist of the match. D.J. Newsom responded 12 seconds later for St. Louis to keep the margin at three goals until DePalma registered his second goal of the game to increase the lead to 8-4 for the Force. The Steamers came back with two goals to cut the lead to two when Mariano Bollella scored on a re-start opportunity and Reiniger scored his second goal of the game while Doran picked up his second assist and Cleveland led 8-6 at the half.

Neil Gilbert opened the fourth quarter with his second point (1g, 1a) of the game at 3:59 of the fourth quarter when he beat Steamers' goalkeeper Brett Phillips while John Ball registered his third assist of the contest. Sterling Wescott notched a goal for St. Louis on the powerplay when Carlos Farias fed him on a re-start opportunity to make the score 9-7. Allen Eller improved the score to 10-7 for Cleveland on the powerplay at 10:48 of the fourth quarter. St. Louis scored with 50 seconds remaining in the game when Wescott fed DiMaria on a running head ball attempt from the side boards however the game would end with the Force winning 10-8.

St. Louis will host the first place Milwaukee Wave on Saturday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. at Savvis Center. The game can be heard live on KFNS and will be shown tape delay on KPLR-TV at 7 p.m. The Steamers will conclude the season the following weekend when they travel to Kansas City on April 22 to take on the Comets then return to Savvis Center in the final regular season game on April 23 to battle the Chicago Storm.
