Flying Tigers Employee Shelbey McLaughlin Wins FSL/Marlins Scholarship

Lakeland, FL - The Flying Tigers are pleased to announce that Shelbey McLauchlin has been selected by the Florida State League (FSL) Scholarship Committee as one of the twelve $1,000 educational scholarship winners. McLauchlin will be a guest of the Florida Marlins in a pre-game ceremony on Sunday, August 14 in Miami.

McLauchlin is a native of Lakeland, Florida and recently graduated from George Jenkins High School. She will attend Hillsborough Community College later this month studying Veterinary Technology. She has been employed by the Detroit Tigers since 2009 as a game-day employee and has assisted with special events and promotions for the Flying Tigers FSL season and Detroit Tigers spring training.

The FSL Scholarship Committee awarded a scholarship to an individual of all twelve FSL teams. To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants had to be an employee of or the child or grandchild of an employee of the participating club. They must also be at least a high school junior by the 2011 fall term. The award was based on grades, financial need, leadership capabilities and job performance.

The Florida Marlins with the FSL have sponsored the scholarship program for the past twelve years and have contributed a total of $112,500. The purpose of the scholarship program is to encourage and reward school age employees and send a message that education is the key to success in life.
