Central Illinois Flying Aces News Release
GREEN BAY, Wisc. - The Central Illinois Flying Aces defeated the Green Bay Gamblers, 3 to 2, in a back and forth game.
Central Illinois opened the scoring a little over five minutes into the game. Philippe Lapointe (Burr Ridge, Ill.) circled behind the net and passed up to Chase Foley (Mendota Heights, Minn.) at the point. Foley quickly put the puck on net and Trevor Janicke (Maple Grove, Minn.) corralled the puck in the slot and put it past the goaltender's glove. It was the Flying Aces' captain's seventeenth goal of the season.
With less than fifteen seconds remaining in the first, Green Bay tied the game. Nicholas Zabaneh attempted a one-timer from the right circle, but missed. His shot ricocheted off the end boards behind the net and Jesse Tucker was able to bank the puck off the Central Illinois goaltender to tie the game.
Connor Mayer (Champlin, Minn.) broke up a Green Bay rush and made a lob pass to Chad Hillebrand (Skokie, Ill.) in the neutral zone. The University of Alaska-Anchorage commit wristed the puck top-shelf from the left circle to break the tie early in the second period.
Less than thirty seconds into the third period, Ryan O'Reilly scored five-hole on the backhand for Green Bay to tie the game again.
Tate Singleton (West Lebanon, NH) broke the tie with a goal with less than six minutes to play. Michael Ferrandino (Lisle, Ill.) passed to Tyler Gratton (Pottstown, Penn.) who was entering the zone with speed. Gratton found Singleton streaking into the slot. Singleton's initial shot was stopped, but he buried the rebound on the backhand.
Mitchell Gibson (Phoenixville, Penn.) faced a barrage of shots with the Green Bay netminder pulled, but he stopped all of them for a final total of forty-one saves.
The Flying Aces finish the weekend a second game in Green Bay tomorrow afternoon. Central Illinois travels to Madison on Friday, March 8th before returning home on March 9th against Muskegon for 3-0-9 Blackout Night.
