Fort Worth Flyers News Release
FORT WORTH, Texas - The Fort Worth Flyers suffered their worst defeat of the season at the hands of the Albuquerque Thunderbirds, falling 111-71 on Friday night at the Fort Worth Convention Center.
"This was definitely our worst game of the season," said Flyers head coach Sam Vincent. "Our guys did not play together, and we were out of rhythm the entire game. Albuquerque did a great job of coming out and being aggressive, and they were able to come away with the win."
The Flyers started the game cold, shooting 22 percent in the first quarter to help Albuquerque take a 21-14 lead at the end of the period. Led by 9 points from Rawle Marshall, the Flyers attempted to close the gap in the second quarter, but the Thunderbirds continued to dominate the game and led 51-39 at halftime. The Thunderbirds took control of the game in the third quarter, outscoring the Flyers 25-13 in the period. The Flyers never recovered, and the Thunderbirds cruised to victory.
The Flyers' cold shooting proved to be the difference in the game as the team shot only 31 percent from the field. Marshall and Ime Udoka were the only two starters to score in double figures with 15 points apiece. Udoka also pulled in 5 rebounds, and Marshall chipped in with 3. Keith Langford added 12 points off the bench, and Kelenna Azubuike contributed 11 points.
Seven Thunderbirds reached double figures, led by 15 points and 5 rebounds from T. J. Cummings. Joe Shipp added 13 points and 5 rebounds, and Cody Toppert scored 12. Dallas native C.J. Miles pitched in 11 points in his first game with the Thunderbirds since his recent assignment to Albuquerque by the Utah Jazz, and Chuck Hayes, Marcus Douthit and Tony Bland all had 10 points. Hayes also dominated the boards for Albuquerque, grabbing 18 rebounds.
The loss drops the Flyers to 9-6 on the season, and the Thunderbirds improved to 9-6. The two teams will battle again on Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m. at the Fort Worth Convention Center.
