TODAY'S GAME: Game one of a three-game series against the Palm Beach Cardinals (StL) at Osceola County Stadium...Game one of a seven-game homestand against Palm Beach at the Fort Myers Miracle...Florida is coming off a three-game series defeat to the Miracle at Hammond Stadium, and a 1-5 road trip against Fort Myers and the Charlotte Stone Crabs...Fourth, and final, series between Florida and Palm Beach in 2018, with Florida leading the series 5-4...The Fire Frogs dropped two of three at home against the St. Louis' Cardinals affiliate from May 1-3.
TODAY'S STARTING PITCHER: 23-year-old Connor Johnstone makes his eighth start of the season (fifth with Florida) in the opener of the three-game set against the Palm Beach Cardinals on Monday night...The product of Wake Forest last appeared in a game for the Mississippi Braves on Aug. 1, blanking the Birmingham Barons (CWS) through 3.2 innings on four hits and four strikeouts...The right-handed pitcher last saw time at the High-A level on July 8, earning his second save of the year with a scoreless frame against the Cardinals at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium...Monday will be Johnstone's third appearance against the Cardinals in 2018 (first start)...The 6-foot-1 hurler has not allowed any hits by Palm Beach over 1.2 innings on two free passes and three punchouts.
BATS BACK WALKER IN SERIES FINALE VICTORY: The Florida Fire Frogs struck early to back up Jeremy Walker's quality start on Sunday afternoon in a 7-3 victory over the Fort Myers Miracle at Hammond Stadium.
Braxton Davidson and Jordan Rodgers both went yard on the day, with Davidson driving in four of the runs. Rodgers fell a triple shy of the cycle, while also tying a season-high for hits.
Walker picked up his team-leading, ninth quality start of the season in his first win since July 19. The Gardner-Webb product allowed just one run on seven hits, two walks and five strikeouts for his third win of the season.
THE KING CONTINUES: Jared James picked up two more hits on Sunday afternoon to stretch his hitting streak to seven games...The Sacramento native is hitting .407 (11-for-27) with three multi-hit performances...The left-handed batter has raised his average be 17 points from .242 to .259 since July 31.
ROSTER MOVE: LHP Kyle Muller has been transferred from Florida to Mississippi (AA)...The 20-year-old appeared in 14 games for Florida, going 4-2 with a 3.24 ERA (29er/80.2ip). The Dallas native struck out 79 in his time with the Fire Frogs, incluidng a career-high 12 in seven frames against the Daytona Tortugas on July 9 at Jackie Robinson Ballpark.
The Atlanta Braves' 11th-ranked prospect (MLB.com) has not lost consecutive decisions this year, with his two losses coming on May 27 and July 20. The southpaw had a season-high, four-game winning streak from June 9 - July 9.
Taking Muller's spot on the roster will be Connor Johnstone. The right-handed pitcher comes over from Mississippi after appearing in seven games (two starts) for the M-Braves...The Wake Forest product was 1-2, with an ERA of 3.00 for the Fire Frogs being being transferred to Mississippi on July 12.
In his time at the Double-A level, Johnstone did not post a record, but had an ERA of just 3.12 (6er/17.1ip) on 18 hits, eight walks and 12 strikeouts.
BUILDING THE PIPELINE: MLB Pipeline revealed its updated prospect rankings, and nine Atlanta Braves farmhands cracked the top-100...Of the nine, seven either currenlty played, or have previously played for the Fire Frogs: Kyle Wright (25), Ian Anderson (40), Austin Riley (44), Cristian Pache (58), Luiz Gohara (63), Touki Toussaint (78), and Drew Waters (100).
