Florida Acquires Rawlings, Waives Jones

FORT MYERS, Fla., March 14 - According to an announcement by Head Coach Jeff Malone, the Florida Flame has acquired forward Reed Rawlings from the NBA Development League available player pool and released guard Torrian Jones.

Rawlings, a 6-7, 215-pound veteran out of Samford University ('00) began the 2005-06 campaign playing overseas in Portugal with FC Porto Ferpinta of the Portuguese Basketball League. He played the 2003-04 and 2004-05 seasons in the D-League with the Asheville Altitude and Columbus Riverdragons. In 59 career D-League regular season games, Rawlings averaged 12.7 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 1.2 steals while shooting 50 percent from the floor, 39 percent from three-point range, and 84.5 percent from the foul line.

Last season, Rawlings helped lead Columbus to the regular season title and a berth in the D-League championship game as an All-NBA Development League honorable mention selection. The Chattanooga, Tenn. native finished the 2004-05 campaign 13th in the D-League in scoring (13.4 ppg), fourth in total steals (61), sixth in steals average (1.3), and seventh in three-point percentage (38.3 percent). Rawlings appeared in 11 NBA D-League games with Asheville and Columbus during the 2003-04 season, averaging 10.1 points, 1.8 rebounds, and 1.1 steals per contest.

As a professional, Rawlings has played both nationally and internationally. Rawlings spent the 2000-01 season in the American Basketball Association (ABA) with the Detroit Dawgs and the 2001-02 campaign in the Continental Basketball Association (CBA) with the Grand Rapids Hoops. In 2003, Rawlings played briefly in the Australian National Basketball League with the Perth Wildcats and toured with Athletes In Action.

Rawlings ranks sixth all-time in Samford history in scoring (1,493 points) and 10th all-time in rebounds (517) becoming one of four players in school history to record at least 1,000 points and grab at least 500 boards. Following his senior season with the Bulldogs, he earned all-tournament honors at the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament, finishing fourth in scoring at 17.7 points per game.

As a senior, Rawlings was a Third-Team All-Trans America Athletic Conference selection while leading Samford to the 2000 NCAA Tournament. In Samford's first-round match-up with Syracuse, Rawlings posted 28 points and tied a career-high with five three-pointers. As a junior, Rawlings led the Bulldogs and finished fifth in the TAAC in scoring (16.5 ppg) as Samford reached the 1999 NCAA Tournament.

Rawlings is expected to be in uniform for the Flame in their next game at Albuquerque on Friday, March 17. He will wear jersey #33.

Jones appeared in 15 games with the Flame. The 6-4, guard averaged 6.2 points and 1.3 rebounds per game while shooting 43 percent from the floor and 86 percent from the free throw line.

Florida (21-17) returns to action this Friday night, as the Flame begins a two-game road swing against the Albuquerque Thunderbirds (19-19) at Tingley Coliseum. Following Friday night's contest, Florida and Albuquerque will round out their back-to-back set on Saturday, March 18 at Tingley. Both games tip-off at 9 p.m. ET/ 7 p.m. MT and can be heard live on Kingdom FM 91.5. The Flame is currently in second place in the NBA Development League standings, 3.5 games behind the first-place Fort Worth Flyers (25-14).

The Florida Flame is the official D-League affiliate of the NBA's Miami Heat, Boston Celtics, Minnesota Timberwolves, and Orlando Magic. Showcasing the best young talent in professional basketball outside of the NBA, the Flame play a 48-game schedule during the 2005-06 season with 23 home games at Germain Arena.
