New Jersey Jackals News Release

Little Falls, NJ - Miguel Flores tossed 8 2/3 shutout innings to lead the Pittsfield Colonials to a 6-0 win over the New Jersey Jackals on Thursday night at Yogi Berra Stadium.

Flores (1-1), a 22-year-old right-hander, threw 143 pitches and struck out a career-high eight batters while scattering seven singles en route to his first win of the season. He walked six batters and departed with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning, but former Jackal Giuseppe Granitto retired left fielder Kevin Clark to end the threat. Flores went 0-2 with a 6.91 ERA in five starts against the Jackals in 2009.

The Jackals left the bases loaded in the second, eighth and ninth innings while stranding 10 runners on base in the contest. The loss ends New Jersey's four-game winning streak while the Colonials snap a five-game skid while salvaging the finale of the three-game series. The Jackals finish their first homestand of the season 5-2 after going 2-5 on their season-opening road trip.

The Colonials plated the game's first two runs on a two-out single by first baseman Wellinson Baez in the second inning and a bases-loaded groundout off the bat of right fielder Angel Molina with two outs in the third. In the fourth, Pittsfield catcher Zane Chavez doubled home Baez and shortstop Matt Nandin laid down a successful two-out suicide squeeze to extend the Colonials' lead to 4-0. Pittsfield tacked on a run in the fifth on a fielders' choice before capping the scoring in the top of the ninth on an Edmondson RBI single.

New Jersey starter Nick Asselin (1-2) turned in seven innings, but took the loss after surrendering five runs on nine hits in seven innings. He walked a pair of batters and did not record a strikeout. Rookie right-hander Jairo Mendez, a Montclair State University alum, allowed one run over the final two innings in his professional debut.

For the Jackals, Clark continued his hot hitting against Pittsfield with a 2-for-4 night at the plate. He is now 11-for-23 in six games against the Colonials this season.

The Jackals travel to Skylands Park on Friday at 6:35 p.m. to begin a three-game weekend series with the Sussex Skyhawks. In the series opener, New Jersey will send left-hander Ryan Lobban (0-1, 8.19 ERA) to the mound against Sussex righty Dan Berlind (0-0, 4.50 ERA) Cody Chrusciel has the live call on the Jackals webcast beginning 10 minutes prior to first pitch at www.jackals.com.
