Floden Grand Slam Beats Riptide 6-2

August 10, 2008 - National Pro Fastpitch (NPF) - New England Riptide News Release

Elgin, Ill August 9th - The New England Riptide took a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the seventh inning today but could not get the third out as Stacy May tied the game with a single and Rachel Folden hit a grand slam to give the Bandits a 6-2 win. Eileen Canney (11-10) pitched a complete game for the Riptide giving up eight hits while the Bandits used three pitchers. Tracie Adix pitched the first three, Amanda Freed the next three and Kristina Thorson (9-5) the final inning to pick up the win.

The Riptide got on the board in the top of the third to take a 2-0 lead. Carri Martin started things with a one out single up the middle. Martin stole second and went to third on some good base running on an infield out. With Lisa Modglin up, a ball got by catcher Folden for a passed ball and the first Riptide run. The passed ball turned out to be irrelevant as Modglin looped a double into right field. Modglin scored the second run of the inning when Stacy May deflected a Jess Merchant ground ball into left field for an error. The Bandits got one back in their half of the third. Stacy May led off with a walk and scored on Folden's hit into the left center gap. Folden was tossed out trying to stretch to a double.

Consecutive one out singles by Mindy Cowles and Laura Harms set the stage. Canney got Ariel Jenkins out on strikes, but May tied the game and after a walk to Kristie Fox, Folden's hit won it.

The Riptide finish their series with the Bandits tomorrow night. They return home to Martin Softball Field on August 14th, 15th, 16th and 17th to wrap up the regular season against the first place Washington Glory.
