Washington Glory News Release
CHANTILLY, VA -- Amber Jackson and Nicole Barber each had three hits and accounted for all five Glory runs as the Glory took their third in-a-row from Akron, this time by a 5-2 score on Sunday night.
Barber had the roughest night though, even after getting hit with a pitch in the first. In the sixth inning, she reached on a bunt single and smartly took second base after a Radara McHugh pitch to Jackson. McHugh had her feet outside the circle putting the ball in play and Barber recognized this. A conference between the Akron coaches & players and the umpires ensued and delayed the game approximately five minutes. Barber was on third base after a single by Jackson when Sara Larquier lined the first pitch she saw from McHugh down the third base line that nailed Barber right in the back. Barber went down but after a couple of minutes, stood back up and resumed her place at third. Three pitches later, Larquier delivered a single scoring Barber.
Jackson however, blasted her fourth home run of the season in Amber Jackson style by sending the ball nearly 300 feet beyond the right field fence to put the Gory up 3-1 in the third. Jackson finished the night 3-for-3, driving in two and scoring two while Barber also went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI. Jackson and Barber either scored or drove in every Glory run in the game and both came up with their second three-hit game of the season.
Jackson had an RBI single in the first to put the Glory up 1-0 before a home run by Susan Ogden tied it in the second. The Glory answered back on Barber's first hit of the game in the second to put teh Glory up 2-1. It was extended to 3-1 on Jackson's blast. Veronica Wootson answered back for Akron in the sixth with her seventh home run of the season to make it a one-run ballgame. The Glory scored twice in the sixth to give Serrano more breathing room into the seventh. Callista Balko delivered an RBI fielder's choice to cap the scoring.
Serrano (11-6) threw a complete game, striking out seven while giving up five hits.
Angela Tincher (12-8) took the loss in going two-plus innings of work, allowing three earned runs on four hits. McHugh went 3 1/3 innings, allowing two earned runs.
The Glory wrap up the series and their tenure at Westfield Monday night at 7:05 p.m. The team will head to Lowell, Mass. on August 14 before the NPF Championship Series in Kimberly, Wisc. commences on August 22. The Glory have already clinched a playoff spot while Akron is fighting to remain in the final playoff position.
