Flight Clinch Playoff Berth After Dismantling Galaxy

June 20, 2011 - Continental Basketball League (CBL) - Florida Flight News Release

(Orlando, FL) - The Florida Flight ended the season for the Gainesville Galaxy by taking a decisive 108-96 victory Saturday, June 18th. The Galaxy opened the game with 3 straight three pointers, and commanded a 10 point lead at the end of the first quarter. The Flight responded by outscoring the Galaxy 32-23 in the second to pull within one at the half. The Flight pulled forward with a 5 point lead after three quarters, and sealed the deal by holding the Galaxy to a 16-point 4th quarter for the 108-96 victory over their division rival.

"This was a must win game for us," said Head Coach Mark King. "We prepared defensively and worked hard all week for this game. Every player on our team contributed in this big-time win for our franchise!" Veteran guard Ernest Jones paced the Flight with 25 points. Forwards Garvin Gordon and Cordell Jeanty contributed 18 apiece, and Fred Meeks also added 15.

The Galaxy was led by Cori Gaither with 24 points. Mike Welch also added 21 for the Galaxy.

The win officially secured a playoff berth for the Flight, who now sit comfortably in second place of the South Division behind the 6-3 Heartland Prowl. The Galaxy (4-7) can no longer catch the Flight, who owns a 3-2 series tie-breaker.

The Flight finishes out the regular season at home against their upcoming playoff foe, the Heartland Prowl, Sunday, June 19th.

"We haven't played the Prowl since the beginning of the season," said Coach King. "We're a different team. Our young players are much more composed, and we've added Meeks, which in my opinion gives us one of the strongest starting back courts in the league. I suspect Heartland is going to try to make a statement as we approach the playoffs, so we're going to have to be ready with a statement of our own."

Tomorrow's game, titled Avalon Middle School Day, will take place at Avalon Middle School in the pristine Avalon Park community of East Orlando, Florida. The Flight will unveil two community outreach programs at half-time of the game: J's for A's and their new Not Afraid to Fly Mentorship Program.

The game is FREE for all attendees, thanks in part to several supportive Orlando businesses who sponsored the operational costs of this event.

"The Flight are all about investing in the lives of our kids," said Veronica Figueroa, Owner of Avalon Town Center Realty. "As a business owner in the same community, we definitely want to partner with the Flight and share in their endeavors."

"We had a slow start, but we're extremely pleased with the recent response of the Avalon Park community, especially the businesses," said King. "With their help, we'll be able to create an exciting platform that assists us in making a difference in the lives of the kids in the Avalon Park community."

Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30pm. Information regarding the two community outreach programs can be found on the Community tab of www.flighthoops.com.
