For Release - Florida Flight Promote Cal Thompson to General Manager

October 1, 2012 - Continental Basketball League (CBL) - Florida Flight News Release

(Orlando, FL) - Effective immediately, the Florida Flight has promoted the University of Central Florida's own Cal Thompson to the position of General Manager.

Thompson came to the Flight during the 2012 season by way of UCF's DeVos Sports Management School, a key partner of the Flight's internship program. A Game Day intern for the 2012 season, Thompson used his sports management skills and work ethic to prove his value and earn a permanent place with the team.

Thompson replaces the void left by former General Manager Rabon Smith, who resigned to pursue other interests. A founding member of the team, Smith also came to the Flight as an intern, and served the Flight as General Manager for both the 2011 and 2012 seasons.

"It's always sad to see a member of this team move on, but that's what we are about - investment and development," said Flight Owner Mark King. "But Cal is multitalented. He brings a lot of value, and I'm confident in his ability to pick up where Rabon left off and propel this franchise to even greater heights!"

Although departing from day-to-day operations, Smith will remain a part of the team in a consulting role.

"I'm humbled and thrilled to be the new General Manager of the Florida Flight," said Thompson. "The mission and vision of the Flight is invigorating. I'm excited to build upon what has already been established and transition things to the next level!"

"With investment and development at our core, we must remember to celebrate when bigger opportunities cause the departure of our players and staff," explained King. "We would not be where we are today without Rabon. He played a vital foundational role for this team, and I am sure he will do the same in his future endeavors!"

Thompson's first task will be the implementation of a new branding campaign for the team, which will be unveiled in the coming weeks. He'll also embark on several player scouting trips to nearby colleges and universities. Thompson's first game as new General Manager will be Saturday, December 8, when the team hosts the Palm Beach Titans in their 3rd Annual Toys for Tots Charity Basketball Game. Everyone who brings a new, unwrapped toy will enjoy free admission.
