Tulsa Oilers News Release

TULSA, OK - Gio Flamminio is bringing his experience and leadership back to the Tulsa Oilers for the 2012-13 season.

The Oilers announced today the signing of the veteran defenseman who played in 63 of Tulsa's 66 games last season. A staple on the Oilers penalty killing unit, Flamminio ended the 2011-12 season with three goals and 12 assists.

"I'm excited to be coming back, and I'm happy to get this out of the way so early in the off-season," Flamminio said. "I have high expectations for myself and the team, and I'm optimistic that we'll add some nice pieces to our roster and be more competitive than we were last season."

"Gio is a great defensive player with an outstanding reputation around the league," said Oilers Head Coach Bruce Ramsay. "He has so much talent on the ice, but his leadership off the ice was extremely valuable to our team and to our younger players."

Flamminio, a Prince Albert, Saskatchewan product, will enter his eighth professional season and seventh CHL campaign. Prior to joining the Oilers, the 5'11" 195-pound blue-liner spent two seasons with the Oklahoma City Blazers and three seasons with the Rapid City Rush.

"We relied on Gio in most of our key situations last season," Ramsay said. "He's a player I can always trust to make a smart play with the puck and we're excited to have him back as one of our defensive anchors."

The Oilers just missed out on a playoff berth last season, but Flamminio knows his team wasn't far from where it needs to be.

"I think last year our youth may have caught up with us toward the end of the season," said Flamminio. "I know that experience will serve us well next season and I'm very happy with the direction of the organization and what they're trying to accomplish here in Tulsa."

Last October, the 28-year old Flamminio played in his 300th CHL game. In November, Flamminio registered a pair of assists against Arizona for his first points as a member of the Oilers and followed up with his first Oilers goal in early December.
