San Angelo Saints News Release
SAN ANGELO – The San Angelo Saints are proud to announce today that 5 members of this year’s team have been invited to attend upper level American Hockey League (AHL) training camps this week. This is the first time in the history of San Angelo hockey that the team has been able to accomplish this.
Forwards Trevor Weisgerber, Chris Minard and Ryan Finnerty were sent to camp with the Milwaukee Admirals and defenseman Matt Frick was sent to camp with the Cleveland Barons. They are slated to return in time for Saints training camp, which begins this weekend. Goaltender Scott Reid has just returned from camp with the Binghamton Senators where he was invited on his own merit.
“The purpose of sending these guys to AHL camps is to get them exposure and try to help further their careers,” said Saints head coach Ray Edwards. “They also benefit from practicing with top-level talent and will come to our training camp in better condition.”
“It’s an exciting new development for the Saints,” added Edwards. “It’s a credit to our organization that we are able to send these guys to AHL camps where the exposure they get will benefit them and our entire franchise.”
Players report to Saints training camp for physicals and fitness testing on Sunday, Oct. 6th. Currently the Saints have 19 players under contract with several more expected to sign before the start of camp this weekend. Training camp will be highlighted by two preseason exhibition games against the arch-rival Odessa Jackalopes on Oct. 10th (home) and 11th (away). The home preseason game is free to season ticket holders and all other tickets will cost $7. However, anyone who brings in 3 non-perishable food items to any of the ticket outlets can get a ticket for just $5. Tickets to the preseason game and all Saints home games are now on sale at the Saints office, the Convention Center and BlairÂ’s Western Wear.
The Saints’ 2003-2004 regular season begins Oct. 17th in Odessa with the home opener set for Saturday, Oct. 18th at 7:05 p.m. against the expansion Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees at the San Angelo Coliseum. Fans are invited to an unofficial Tailgate Party prior to the game in the coliseum parking lot featuring a live broadcast by Saints flagship radio station, Magic 98 – and a Post-Game Party with the players after the game at the Little River Club.
