Kannapolis, NC - The West Virginia Power scored five times in the third inning and beat the Kannapolis Intimidators, 6-3, at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium Tuesday night. The Intimidators (24-28) have now lost four of their last five games, while the Power (34-15) has won four games in a row to maintain the best record in the South Atlantic League.
The Intimidators got out of the gates early, getting back-to-back home runs from Chris Carter and Stefan Gartrell in the bottom of the first to take a 2-0 lead.
But, Kannapolis starter Ricky Brooks unexpectedly came out of the game in the third, leaving with an undisclosed injury after 2.2 innings. Kanekoa Texeira was thrust into a tough situation, entering the game on a moment?s notice. Texeira gave up two more runs in the inning, as West Virginia put up five runs on five hits and one Kannapolis error. Kannapolis got one run back in the bottom of the third off West Virginia starter Jeremy Jeffress, who was making his South Atlantic League debut. The 19-year old hit 99 MPH on the radar on a couple occasions and the win, giving up three runs on five hits in five innings.
The middle relievers did a great job in expanded roles. After Texeira?s 2.1 innings of work, Ryan Rote came in and delivered four innings of one-hit relief with five strikeouts. West Virginia?s Dustin Lidyard did not allow a hit in three innings of relief.
Brandon Allen tried to start a rally in the ninth, leading off the inning with a double. With two outs, Archie Gilbert lined a ball off the left field wall, but a perfect throw from left fielder Michael Brantley was enough to gun down Gilbert trying to slide into the second.
Brooks (2-6) took the loss for Kannapolis, his third in his last three starts.
Seven different Intimidators each had one hit, with Rob Hudson, Carter, Gartrell, and Gilbert each driving in one run.
The second game of the series is an early one on Wednesday. Game time is set for 10:05 am as the Intimidators take on the Power on the third and final Education Day of the 2007 season.
