Five-Run Seventh Inning Paves Way to 7-1 Victory

Gresham GreyWolves News Release

WALLA WALLA, WA. - A five-run burst in the seventh inning of Sunday's game against the Walla Walla Sweets broke a 1-1 deadlock and propelled the Gresham GreyWolves to a big 7-1 victory. The win evened up the series at one game apiece and allowed Gresham (10-4, 21-20 overall) to move back into sole possession of first place in the South Division's second half standings.

Looking to erase any lingering memories from Saturday's loss, Justin Barchus' team jumped out to an early 1-0 advantage at Borleske Stadium. Chapman product Konnor Zickefoose got the early rally started with a one-out double, and he came around to score on the very next at-bat after a wild pitch and an error by the catcher.

After Walla Walla (7-7, 22-19) tied the game back up with a single run in the bottom half of the first, the contest remained all square until the seventh. That's when the GreyWolves suddenly got hot and broke the game open.

Mark Cardinalli, Ryan Smith, and Jeffrey Mitchell, Jr. recorded the first three RBIs of the frame to give them some space from the opponent, and a two-out, two-RBI double off the bat of Drew Curtis pushed Gresham's lead to 6-1. The club would add one last run in the ninth inning thanks to a Jordan Barchus RBI single, extending its advantage to six runs.

The newfound lead was more than enough for starter Chris Brown (UC Davis) to work with, who had been on cruise control from the second inning onward. Brown (2-2) earned the win after going nine full innings, allowing just one run on three hits.

The GreyWolves are now in position to go for a fifth consecutive series win if they can grab another victory in Walla Walla. First pitch for the series finale is set for 7:05 p.m. from Borleske Stadium.
