
Five-Run First Helps Thunder Past 'Runners

EDINBURG, Texas - The McAllen Thunder used a five run first inning to help snap their five-game losing streak with a 9-4 victory over the Edinburg Roadrunners Monday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium.
Rashad Ford (3-1) pitched seven innings and allowed four runs on seven hits while striking out three for his third win of the season.
Four straight hits to start the top of the first quickly gave the Thunder (15-22) three runs. One out later, Carlos Gallardo hit an RBI double that scored Wilson Batista from second base. Zach Mandelblatt then followed with an RBI single making it 5-0 McAllen.
The Thunder added three more runs in the top of the third with RBI singles from Mandelblatt, Blake Sanders and Eric Eiland making it 8-0.
The Roadrunners (16-22) got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third. After reaching on a fielder's choice, Robert Matlock came into score on an RBI single by Osiel Flores which made the score 8-1 McAllen.
R.J. Harris reached on a single in the bottom of the fourth and then stole second base. After a walk to Brandon Wilkerson, Harris came into score on fielding error. C.J. Beatty then followed with a two-run double that allowed Wilkerson and Jason Thomas to score cutting the Thunder lead 8-4.
McAllen added a run in the top of the seventh on an RBI ground out by Blake Sanders that pushed their lead to 9-4.
Robert Roth and Luis Matamoros pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth inning giving McAllen the 9-4 victory.
The Roadrunners and Thunder will play game three of their four-game series Tuesday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium. Scott Wingo (2-2) is expected to face Kurt Houck (2-4) with the first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
