Edmonton Capitals News Release
Chico, CA - Despite a four-run push in the final two innings, the Edmonton Capitals came up just short in their bid for a come-from-behind victory in their series opener against the Outlaws in Chico on Sunday night, as they lost 6-5.
The Caps and Outlaws opened a lengthy nine-games-in-eight days series on Sunday at Nettleton Stadium, with the home team building a 6-1 lead through six innings. Edmonton mounted a valiant comeback with two runs in the eighth and two more in the ninth - and even had the bases loaded with two outs in the final inning - before settling for the slim defeat.
Third baseman Matt Rogelstad drove in a pair of runs for the Caps with a clutch single in the eighth inning to cut Chico's lead to 6-3. Second baseman Alex Chavez and catcher Lou Santangelo then knocked in back-to-back runs in the ninth to make it 6-5, but left fielder Todd Linden grounded out with two outs and the bases loaded to end the comeback attempt.
Jason Stevenson picked up the victory on the mound for Chico, holding the Caps to three runs on five hits with four strikeouts through 7.1 innings. Starter Alexander Francisco took the loss for Edmonton, as he gave up all six Outlaws runs on nine hits through five innings, while striking out five batters.
The Caps added two new players to their roster on Sunday as outfielder Jamie McGraw and pitcher Andrew Arreola joined the team in Chico. Outfielder Steve Brown is on Edmonton's inactive list for the current road trip, while pitcher Albie Lopez has been released. McGraw, a former Texas Rangers affiliate player, hit a single, walked twice and scored a run on Sunday, while Arreola, older brother of fellow Caps pitcher Daryl Arreola, is scheduled to get the start on Monday.
The Caps (22-14) have just begun a 12-game road trip that sees them playing July 3-10 in Chico against the Outlaws (14-19) and July 12-14 in Calgary versus the provincial rival Vipers (22-15). The Caps return to TELUS Field to host the Vipers and continue the battle of Alberta July 15-17.
The Capitals are the city's most affordable entertainment option in the summer featuring Edmonton's largest patio! Season seats start at less than $9 per seat. Individual game tickets start at $10 in advance and can be purchased at the Capitals Box Office (10233 - 96 Ave) during regular business hours Monday through Friday, at any Ticketmaster location, online at capsbaseball.ca or via phone at 780-414-GOAL (4625).
