Danville Otterbots News Release
Danville, VA - Chase Larsson homered two times and Kyle Kubitza doubled twice on Saturday night. The D-Braves blew the game open in the seventh inning when they scored five runs to give them an 8-3 victory in the rubber game of a three game series with the Burlington Royals.
The Braves jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the contest with two runs in the first and another in the second. Kyle Kubitza got his first double and first RBI of the night in the bottom of the first when he drove Elmer Reyes home from second. Brandon Drury, who was in the cleanup spot, singled Kubitza home to finish of the scoring in the first. Then in the second, Larsson took the first pitch he saw from Robinson Yambati and deposited it well over the right field wall for his second homerun of the season and the third Danville run of the night.
In the third, the Royals were able to cut the run differential to one. With runners on first and second the cleanup hitter for Burlington, Murray Watts, took a David Filak pitch deep to right center field that went off the very top of the wall. Two runs scored and the Braves lead was cut to 3-2.
Then in the fifth inning, the Braves let the Royals tie it up. The first batter of the inning, Adams, hit a routine grounder to short that Nick Ahmed allowed to go under hit mitt and through his legs. Later in the inning, with Adams now on third and two down, Filak overthrew his first pitch to Watts. The ball skipped in the dirt in front of catcher, Chad Comer, and to the backstop. Adams scored with no problem and the game was tied at three. Filak's night was over there, he gave up seven hits and two earned runs while striking out five.
The game remained that way until the Danville offensive exploded in the seventh. Tyler Graham came in for the Royals to start the inning. Graham started the night with a 1.27 ERA in nine appearances, but it wouldn't end that way. Larsson led off the inning with his second homer of the night to right field, a ball that went higher and further then his earlier homerun. Shortly after, Kubitza lined a bases clearing double down the left field line. He advanced to third on a throw home and would later score on a Drury sacrifice fly. Kubitza ended the night with two doubles, two runs scored and four runs batted in. Graham was chased out of the ballgame after two-thirds of an inning, and his ERA standing at 3.27.
John Cornely pitched the sixth, seventh and eighth innings to earn his first win of the year. He allowed just one hit and one walk while striking out five in his three innings of work. Daniel Lopez pitched a one-two-three ninth with two strikeouts of his own.
The Braves returned to .500 (16-16) and will open a three game series with the Pulaski Mariners on Sunday afternoon at 4:00 pm.
