Five Home Runs hit by Reading in defeat by Portland

Reading's offense managed five home runs in a 13-9 loss to the Sea Dogs

The Fightin Phils (33-45) offense led by Jake Fox belted a total of five home runs and scored nine runs but lost 13-9 to the Portland Sea Dogs (53-27). Reading has now lost 12 straight games which is the most in team history and the Sea Dogs swept the Fightins for the first time in a four game series at FirstEnergy Stadium.

Ryan Demmin got into early trouble in top of the 1st inning against the Sea Dogs as he gave up five runs off five hits to the Sea Dogs. Sean Coyle hit a RBI triple to score Derrik Gibson with one out then Stefan Welch followed with a RBI single to score Coyle. After Keury De La Cruz hit a single, Matt Spring hit a three-run home run to give the Sea Dogs a 5-0 lead.

Reading inched back in the bottom of the 1st inning off Sea Dogs starter Mike McCarthy as Jake Fox hit a two-run home run to score Kelly Dugan with two outs to put Reading within three runs 5-2. Matt Spring struck again off Demmin in the top of the 3rd inning as he hit a two-run home run to score Sean Coyle and extend Portland's lead to 7-2.

Jake Fox hit a three-run home run off McCarthy in the bottom of the 3rd inning to put Reading within two runs 7-5. Carlos Alonso hit a double and Kelly Dugan was hit by a pitch and both scored on the play.

Ryan Demmin loaded up the bases in the top of the 4th inning without recording an out as he gave up a single and two walks. He left the game for Colton Murray who gave up a three-run double to Sean Coyle to give the Sea Dogs a 10-2 lead. Keury De La Cruz hit a RBI single to score Coyle and Jonathan Roof hit a RBI double to score Stefan Welch to give the Sea Dogs a 12-5 lead.

Coyle hit a RBI single off Mike Nesseth in the top of the 5th inning to score Derrik Gibson to extend the Sea Dogs lead to 13-5. Kelly Dugan came back in the bottom of the 5th inning with a two-run home run off McCarthy to put Reading within six runs 13-7. Edgar Duran hit a solo home run off Wilfredo Boscon in the bottom of the 6th inning and Kelly Dugan hit his second home run of the game in the bottom of the 7th inning to put Reading within four runs 13-9.

Matt Hoffman tossed two scoreless innings in relief as he gave up just one hit and recorded one strikeout.

The Fightin Phils welcome in the New Hampshire Fisher Cats tomorrow night at FirstEnergy Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm.
